We have already discussed about the file and extensions type in Microsoft windows xp. Now, we will discuss how to open a file in other program. Like if I have a file in Microsoft word and I want it open it with notepad, then I have to change the details for that particular file extension to create a permanent default for that file type. For Example –I want my all .gif files always open with windows picture and Fax viewer, I can configure it by following these steps > Go to start menu and select Control Panel....

A set of characters at the end of the file name which describes the type of information which the file has is called File extension. A file name extension can also indicate which application is associated with the file. For instance, my file is mypicture.jpg.
