Global Kokan Festival 2013-14 to attract 7 lakh visitors this year

Mumbai Oct 16th 2013(Sailesh Gandhi): KokanBhumiPratisthan has announced a delightful treat of Global Kokan Festival, 4^th edition of the festival, this year from December 14-17 in Navi Mumbai. The Festival, spread in about 3 lakh square feet area, is expected to be the grandest edition as it will be jointly held in association with Credai-BANM Property Exhibition 2013. This will also result in increased number of footfalls up to 7 lakh visitors. State Excise Minister and Thane Guardian Minister, Shree Ganesh Naik is the chief advisor of this mega festival.

Shree Sanjeev Naik, Member of Parliament, said, “Kokan is the land of inspiration. The leaders from Kokan have been guiding pillars of the nation since ages. It is our responsibility to preserve this rich heritage of our Kokan and we also have to take it to the world. Global Kokan Festival is not just a fun fiesta but imbibes a deep message to the world that this is the land of opportunities and learning. This is an opportunity for the people from Kokan and the people interested in developing and investing in Kokan. We invite people from across the country and world to visit Kokan and Global Kokan Festival.”

To add more business value to the Festival, CREDAI-BANM have also joined hands with their edition of CREDAI-BANM Property Exhibition 2013). “Navi Mumbai has drawn attention of policy makers and planners from across the country and globe alike. When several international infrastructure plans are taking shape here, this modern day city has become a preferred destination of investment. Its geographic location adds to its advantage as it is easily accessible to all important business centres and areas right from Mumbai to Kalyan-Dombivali, Panvel, Raigad and Pune,” said the officials of CREDAI – BANM.

While making the announcement of this year’s edition of Global Kokan Festival, Shri Bhai Jatap, Member of Legislative Assembly, said, “Global Kokan Festival is growing in its size, scale, volume and thinking with every year. This year also is a new beginning as we are going to take this festival to various parts of Maharashtra. We are also going to participate in the national tourism events and road-shows. Nevertheless, this year we will be participating in London Travel Mart and Berlin Travel Mart. Hence, we will truly bring Global Kokan Festival on global platforms. Next Global Kokan will be held in London.”

The event witnesses many celebrities, famous personalities and dignitaries from various political and government functionaries. This will be the 4^rdedition of the Global Kokan Festival and more than 4.5 lakh visitors visiting the last edition at the Nesco Ground in Goregaon.

Shruti Mahajan & Alke Reeh exhibition "Reflection"

Mumbai Oct 9^th 2013(Eddie Patel): Shruti Mahajan and Alke Reeh have been involved in the exchange of visual, conceptual and contextual elements of their works since 2009, when Alke visited Mumbai for the NRW artist residency. This led to a friendship and a flow of letters, emails and conversations culminating in exhibitions. In 2010, the two artists exhibited in the show, Nets and Other Works at the Field Institut Hombroich, Neuss, which constituted of paintings, photographs and installations, leading to fluid experimental ways of sharing aesthetic ideas and cultural exchange. In 2012-13, both artists came together again through a series of three exhibitions in Germany - In kunstverein Xanten, Städtische Galerie, Alte Post, Neuss and Museum Siegburg.

The exhibition for them is a way to ask questions and therefore the mounting of the show follows the patterns of a conversation reflecting on the ideas related to architecture, forms, usage of whites, emptiness of lived spaces, the occurrence of some common elements like Jali (a significant element of Islamic architecture) certain embroidery stitches and working with structure and line. It is interesting to see how these questions are carefully answered by placing a particular work, pulled out of its regular oeuvre, next to the other. Usage of similar techniques also challenge the question of authorship and this brings out a different experience of viewing. MMB Mumbai is delighted to present this collaboration aptly titled as ‘Reflection’- on each other’s work.

Mohan Samant Paintings is one of India’s most exciting modernists.It is the first major exhibition after Samant’s death in 2004. It attempts to reveal the complexity and density of this genius' oeuvre. A single work could employ many complicated techniques and the show includes mixed media, watercolours, oils and elaborate paper cutouts.

 

 

Samant’s art reflects the full gamut of historical, spiritual and quotidian experience, so that one day’s theme might illustrate a scene from a Hindu scripture and the next day’s subject might be a seaside festival. In his technical experimentation and the range of his subject matter, Samant has forged his own path through traditional and modern Indian painting as well as the New York art world.

 

With one foot in the distant past and the other in the contemporary, Samant epitomizes the role of the individualist who finds inspiration strewn across the ages and then speaks in a voice that reflects his own time.

 

Painter and musician, Samant left India permanently in 1968, and visited occasionally over the years. As a result, he gradually slipped off the art map of the country and most people are unfamiliar with the depth and range of his work.

 

 

 

 

 

The Jehangir Nicholson Art Foundation in collaboration with the CSMVS and the Estate of Mohan Samant, which will loan works from New York for the exhibition, are looking to reacquaint people with one of the most complex and exciting modernists the country has produced.
