MumbaiOct 1st 2013(Eddie Patel): Picture this. Karishma Kapoor wearing a black T-shirt and track pants with comfortable flip-flops. Hair freshly washed and dried naturally. No makeup. Not even lipgloss. Standing in a kitchen, balancing a cookbook in one hand and a measuring cup in the other - trying to pour out the right amount of rice for biryani... No, this is not a scene from a movie. This is the real Karishma, 39, working mom, trying to balance home and work, making chicken biryani for the little ones, Samaira, 8 and Kiaan, 3. 'They have been vegetarian so far and I have just got them to like chicken biryani. I want to cook for my kids but am not very good. So I get recipes from the internet and try them out.' This real-life mom picture makes for an attractive image, even without makeup. Surprisingly petite, she has a great figure, porcelain skin and is charmingly down-to-earth and warm: Yummy Mummy (her new book) in every way!
The Real Karishma Two years after GH first featured her as the cover girl, Karishma remains as grounded as she was, she still talks about her "normal" childhood where the values of hard work and sincerity were drilled into her. But she has also reinvented herself. She is no longer Karishma, the "Film Star". She is Karishma the radio personality,

Karishma the author, Karishma the business woman running her own online shopping portal. 'People ask me about the one role that I would like to play as my " lifetime" role and I say, I am playing the greatest role of my life every day. That of being a mother. I do not miss the "lights, camera, action" of the movies; the glamour of the industry. I don't mind being away from it all. Every day of my life, I am living the greatest role any woman can get to play,' she says.

"Mom": MASTER OF MULTI-TASKING The actor loves the term and lives by it Even as she is picking out outfits for our cover-shoot, she is thinking of what Samaira and Kiaan will wear for a Ganesh Utsav function in the evening. 'I love picking out their outfits. When we wear Indian clothes, I like to coordinate our colours. I am
wearing a cream and red anarkali in the evening, so I want Samaira to also wear something similar. Kiaan will wear a white kurta and dhoti,' she says, giving instructions to her children's' nanny on the phone while our makeup artist applies makeup on her. Next she is on the phone with her mother, former actor Babita, asking her when she will come to her house for the Ganesh Utsav function. Karishma moved to Mumbai from Delhi, and set up her own home, when she was well into her second pregnancy. As the shoot progresses, it is time for Samaira and Kiaan to return from school and play-group respectively, and Mama Karishma is on the phone in between shots, asking them about their day.
Getting Back To Work One might ask, if she misses her children so much, why work at all? 'It is not so much about working as it is about being happy. If a woman is happy, everyone in her home will be happy. When I had Samaira, I did not work for 5 years. I had already had a successful 15 year long career, having worked since I was 16. I was happy to stay home and enjoy my daughter. But during Kiaan's time, I was working even when I was 8-months pregnant. While my priorities are clear - children, family, home and work - in that order; I feel that now I want to work, try out new things, explore different avenues,' she says. 'But, as I have said in my book, the essence of a happy life is balance. You can be a professional and a mom. I was lucky that I could afford to take a 5-year-long sabbatical, so many mothers can't. The decision to come back to work after a child and when to do so, depends on the person. You cannot judge anyone on this.

The most important thing is that you should be happy with your decision,' she says. Nuggets of parenting insights like these are plenty in her book, My Yummy Mummy Guide. The tag-line of the book says it all, "From Getting Pregnant to Being a Successful Working Mom and Beyond". She says that her reason for writing the book is her children. In fact, she rates the book higher than her films in terms of the legacy she is creating for her children.
