From S K Somaiya College on child trafficking, child labour, farmer suicide
Mumbai Sep 20th 2013(Sailesh Gandhi): A social awareness programme was conducted by the department of Sociology, S.K Somaiya College on Saturday 20th Sept. The activity carried out by the students, added impetus and showcased the students ‘preliminary research work on socially relevant issues within the rural and urban areas such as farmer’s suicides, child trafficking, child labour, and changing trends in work behavior within the private and the public sector. The purpose of the program was to build awareness about sensitive issues affecting our society hence giving students a chance to witness practical experience and insight into social issues beyond the confines of the classroom.
Eminent speaker like ACP Vasant Dhoble, addressed the issue of Child Trafficking in Mumbai followed by presentations and research through power point, short films on the issue.
On the occasion Prof Susannah Malkan faculty coordinator said " The purpose of this programme is to give to students a platform for expressing their views and showcase the knowledge they have gathered through ‘experiential learning’ on relevant social issues. Apart from generating greater sensitivity to social problems, this programme will also create the foundations for ‘young researchers’ to explore the avenues of the knowledge they have acquired in different ways"
The program aims at not only connecting with different agencies and communities in dealing with the various social issues, but they are also able to understand the scope of the subject of sociology through this Endeavour.
